A wonderful opportunity to develop your Arctic skills, using both traditional and modern modes of transport. This seven-day break includes a three-day adventure in which you will first 'mush' your own team of huskies through the Arctic landscapes, before the exhilaration of steering your own snowmobile as your expedition continues. You will spend two nights in genuine wilderness cabins, before returning to the comforts of the Davvi Arctic Lodge to complete your week's holiday.
Special Offer: £50 per couple of published price below
Departures: From Bristol, Gatwick & Manchester
Dates: January 2010 to March 2010
You fly around 0830 on a Saturday from Gatwick to Tromso in Norway, arriving approx 1245, followed by a scenic four-hour coach transfer to our hotel, the Davvi Arctic Lodge in Karesuando in Northern Finland, on the edge of Europe's last great wilderness. After checking in, it is time to be provided with your included all-in-one thermal suits and boots. Temperatures here can fall as low as -35C and your thermal suit and boots are an essential part of your short break package. Please note that hats, scarves and gloves are also necessary but are not included. Remember to pack some for everyone! You have the rest of the evening to enjoy dinner and relax.
After breakfast you set off on your great adventure, meeting up with you own team of dogs, who will be eager for the off! You will receive instruction on their care and how to handle the sled before departing. Only the swish of the sled's runners in the snow will disturb the profound silence of the wilderness. You will spend the majority of the day with the dogs, including several hours travelling. A simple lunch is taken by an open fire en route to your first wilderness cabin, where your first priority is to care for your dogs. You will want to unharness them and settle them down, providing them with a well-deserved meal. Please note that wilderness cabins are, by their nature, basic. That is the essence of the experience. There is no electricity or running water. Facilities are basic, with bunk beds and an outside toilet. Light is provided by candles. You must be prepared to share the cabin with other members of your party. As a group, you all help cook supper on the cabin's wood-burning stove before turning in for the night in sleeping bags.
In the morning, everybody takes care of their own dogs, again ensuring they are well fed and watered before being harnessed up again. Breakfast is prepared together and you set out on the second day of your adventure, passing through forests, across snow-draped fells and over frozen lakes. We stop for a simple lunch and a change of transport! You wave farewell to your loyal team of huskies as now you assume the controls of a snowmobile, once more striking out deep into the wilderness, arriving in the late afternoon at your second wilderness cabin, where similar conditions as before will prevail.
After helping prepare breakfast, you make an early start steering your snowmobile towards the welcome warmth and hospitality of the Davvi Arctic Lodge, where you should arrive in time for lunch, with the afternoon free before dinner.
You enjoy the comforts of the Davvi Arctic Lodge on a full-board basis, with the freedom to explore the local area or to join in some of our optional excursions. What about visiting a Sami museum in a nearby village? Or perhaps you would like to try your hand at a Reindeer Camp Experience? During the evenings you will perhaps want to set out on an optional safari in the hope of witnessing the Northern Lights.
You set off around 0200 on the return transfer to Tromso, where your flight departs at 0630, returning you to Gatwick at 0900.
