A night in a Glass Igloo

Lights Over Lake Inari

This holiday is specifically designed to enhance your chances of experiencing the Northern Lights. Your base will be the homely Nellim hotel and Apartments and from there, we will head out to some of the best Aurora viewing spots anywhere in Western Europe.

Not least of these is our very own Aurora Camp situated on an island amidst the endless frozen ice of mystical Lake Inari. It's a remote place far from any artificial light pollution making it the perfect spot to gaze skywards in wonderment. And don't worry about the cold, we'll provide you with thermal outfits, a blazing fire and plenty of warm soup and drinks to keep the midnight chills at bay. The time passes swiftly in such a remarkable place!

Thursday

Flights, transfers, dinner and Aurora Camp Stake Out

What an unbelievable contrast! A day which starts with the hustle and bustle of London's Heathrow Airport will find end in a remote family run hotel more than 200km north of the Arctic Circle. But that's not all. Sometime around midnight you'll find yourself at Aurora Camp gazing skywards while being fortified by warm soup. Don't worry, you can have a lie in tomorrow morning, breakfast is served until 11am.

Friday

Lake Inari Husky sledding and Aurora Snowmobile Safari

It just gets better. After a leisurely morning, we'll harness up the dog teams and take the reins for a safari on the thick frozen ice of Lake Inari. Last night's visit to the lake will seem more like a dream as the daylight reveals Inari's seemingly endless ice. Your husky safari will last for about 4 hours and includes lunch by an open fire.

After dinner at the hotel, why not take advantage of one of the saunas before we head out again into the darkness on snowmobiles in search of the Northern Lights. The optimum time for viewing the celestial light show is around 11pm to 1am so we'll leave Nellim at about 10pm and return after a 30km journey at approximately 1am. Again, breakfast is served late.

Saturday

Lie in, Snowshoeing, Ice Fishing and Aurora Camp Stake Out

The morning is free for a well deserved lie in or the energetic might want to try sledging down the snowy slopes onto the lake - it's childhood revisited. This afternoon you will be provided with snowshoes and your guide will lead you off the beaten tracks to explore the terrain on foot. Snowshoes allow you to go just about anywhere and you should be able to see footprints in the snow that betray the presence of the local wildlife.

You will also get the opportunity to catch your own dinner with a spot of ice fishing. If you get lucky then you'll be sampling one of Lapland's staples as fresh as fresh can be.

After dinner and some time to relax it's back to Lake Inari for your second stake out at Aurora Camp.

Sunday

Snowmobiles, Reindeer and Glass Igloo

We're really proud of this day. You'll commence after breakfast by jumping on the snowmobiles and speeding towards a local reindeer farm where you'll have the opportunity to take the reins for a short circuit in a reindeer pulled sledge. After lunch you'll head back to Nellim to collect your luggage before transferring to Kakslauttanen where your remarkable overnight accommodation awaits.

The Kakslauttanen Igloo Village enjoys a thoroughly well deserved reputation for the sheer uniqueness of its accommodation, most notably the glass igloos, which provide allow you to sleep under the Lapp sky hopefully admiring the Northern Lights. And, it's all at a comfortable room temperature. The experience is equally unforgettable when there is a snowstorm.

The Glass igloos have been built from a very special thermo glass which guarantees that inside the igloo it is always a normal room temperature. It also prevents the glass from not frosting over hence keeping the view clear even when the temperature drops under -30c. To increase your comfort each igloo has a luxury bed and a discreet toilet.

Monday

Airport transfers and flight

Why not spend your last morning in Lapland in a lovely warm sauna and, for the very brave, try the icy plunge pool afterwards? Suitably invigorated you'll be transferred back to Ivalo Airport for your return flights to the UK hopefully having seen at least one full blown Aurora Borealis. Of course nobody can guarantee that you will but if you are unlucky then we remain absolutely positive that you'll be heading home with a host of unforgettable memories.
