Sleep in a traditional lawu amid the silence of the forest, discover Sámi culture and enjoy the pleasures of the Davvi Arctic Lodge

THE SÁMI CULTURE was born from a semi-nomadic lifestyle, following the migrating reindeer herds and living in lavvus, tepee-style tents which could easily be re-sited as the herds wandered the Arctic tundra. Now you too can spend a night in a traditional Sámi lavvu. In our Tented Base Camp, you will sleep amid the silent forest upon a bed of reindeer skins, enjoying the cosy warmth provided by a woodburning stove. Plus, your short break includes a Reindeer Camp Experience and a Snowshoe Expedition.

3 Night Itinerary:

Day 1

You fly around 0940 on a Saturday from Gatwick to Tromsø in Norway, arriving approx. 1420, followed by a scenic four-hour coach transfer to our hotel, the Davvi Arctic Lodge in Karesuando in Northern Finland, an area of fantastic scenery and on the edge of Europe's last great wilderness. After checking in, it is time to be provided with your included all-in-one thermal suits and boots. Temperatures in this part of Lapland can fall as low as -35C at this time of the year and your thermal suit and boots are an essential part of your short break package. Please note that hats, scarves and gloves are also necessary but are not included. After a short welcome brief, you have the rest of the evening to enjoy dinner and then perhaps relax in the Sámi Lounge.

Day 2

After breakfast, you set off on a Reindeer Camp Experience (duration three hours) during which you will learn about reindeer herding and how to lasso a reindeer, followed by a reindeer sleigh safari through the silent Arctic scenery.

After lunch at the Davvi Arctic Lodge, you set out again into the glorious snowscapes, this time learning new skills on a Snowshoe Expedition, lasting around two hours. After returning to the Davvi Arctic Lodge in time for dinner, you set out once again to check in to your unique overnight accommodation in the nearby Tented Base Camp, set in an enchanting stretch of forest, far from the bright lights of civilisation. Your lawu is welcoming and cosy, warmed by a woodburning stove. Step outside, and you might be lucky enough to glimpse the Northern Lights overhead, undimmed by light pollution. And as you settle down to sleep on a bed of reindeer skins, you sense the magical spirits of the night time forest encapsulated in the silence.

Day 3

You return to the Davvi Arctic Lodge where you will enjoy breakfast after which the rest of the day is free to enjoy the Lapland landscapes, perhaps joining our optional excursions. What about visiting a Sámi museum in a nearby village? Or perhaps driving a snowmobile through the Arctic tundra on our Fell Viewpoint Safari? After dinner at the Davvi Arctic Lodge, there is still time for you to join one of our optional night-time excursions (at extra cost), such as a Northern Lights Husky Safari, in the hope of glimpsing that magnificent natural phenomenon.

Day 4

After breakfast, you depart on your return transfer to Tromsø, stopping for some souvenir shopping en route. Packed lunch. Your flight home at around 1620 will return you to Gatwick at around 1840 UK time.

SEVEN NIGHTS: Please note seven-night departures include all of the elements of the three-night departures with four extra nights on a full-board basis. Itineraries are adjusted accordingly; where possible activities will be spread over your stay although this cannot be guaranteed.
